About the Ph.D in Education Programme
The Doctoral Programme in Education aims to develop a systematic understanding of research in education by unfolding its various dimensions as an organized area of study. The program envisages preparing the scholars to undertake a systematized enquiry and orient them to study, design, and examine problems in education both, conceptually and empirically. It offers an opportunity for scholars to interact and learn from faculty from diverse disciplines of Education. The doctoral programme carries a holistic and inclusive approach towards the multi-dimensional nature of education in today’s globalized world. It allows an in-depth study in the core and perspective areas of education such as, educational theory, foundational areas of education, educational practice and policy related concerns in education. It also comprises a systematic introduction to courses in research methodology which will enable the scholars to undertake qualitative, longitudinal, ethnographic, phenomenological, comparative, and quantitative works in education as an area of study.
Programme Overview
- A candidate seeking admission after a 2-year (4-semester) master’s degree should have at least an aggregate of 55% marks or its equivalent grade ‘B’ on the UGC 10-point scale.
- A candidate seeking admission after a 4-year (8-semester) bachelor’s degree in research should have a minimum CGPA of 7.5/10 with UGC-NET qualifications.
- Candidates who have secured their master’s degree under (10+2) +3+2 or (10+2) +4+2 or (10+2) +4 patterns of study are eligible to enroll in the PhD programmes as per NEP 2020.
- A 1-year (2-semester) master’s degree after 4-year undergraduate degree/ 5 years integrated master’s degree with at least an aggregate 55% marks or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 10-point scale or an equivalent grade on a point scale wherever grading system is followed or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational institution accredited by approved, recognized by an authority, and established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country to assess, accredit or assure quality and standards of educational institutions.
- Full-time – The minimum duration of Ph.D. is of 6 semesters (3 years) including the coursework.
- Part-time – The minimum duration of Ph.D. is of 8 semesters (4 years) including the coursework.
- The reservation policy of the Jharkhand State Government shall be strictly followed as per the roster approved by the relevant department of the Government.
Teacher Education, Educational planning and management, Gender Studies, Inclusive Education, Teacher Policies/programs, Tribal Education, Minority Education, Measurement and Evaluation, Examination, Technology in Education and its impact, Policy Research focusing on NEP 2020 and many more. However, Interdisciplinary research are encouraged
The Pre-Ph. D course work is spread over Two Semesters (i.e., one Year) and comprises five compulsory papers including one core/elective paper of education discipline. (For details please refer to Ph.D. UMU ordinance available on the University website).
Ph.D. in Education Admission Process
A candidate (Indian or foreign) will be considered for admission only after passing the University’s Entrance Examination.
Entrance Exam:
The Entrance Examination is MCQ based. There are two sections. First section consists of 50 MCQ based on General Awareness and Research Methodology. Second section consists of 50 MCQ questions based on subject domain knowledge. Candidates with an overall score of 50% or higher in the General category and 45% or higher in the SC/ST/OBC category will be eligible for an interview.
NOTE: Candidates having an M. Phil degree or who have passed the JEST (Joint Entrance Screening Test) of DAE, UGC-NET, or GATE-IIT will be exempted from the Entrance Examination but must register with the university and be interviewed by a committee formed by the university for the purpose, as per UGC Guidelines.
Interview:
Every eligible candidate interested in pursuing a Ph.D. n Computer Science degree will be required to appear in an interview conducted by the University’s Committee. All of these candidates will apply to the university and be scheduled for an interview. The interview will be worth 50 marks, and the final merit list will be decided by the linear sum of the entrance exam and interview scores.
Successful candidates will have the option to pursue research either full-time or part-time. Normally, candidates who are awarded a fellowship by a university or other organization are required to work full-time on their research projects. Part-time students may be able to register if they are employed by an educational or research institution. Furthermore, they would work and be present on the University Campus in Ranchi as needed for their research.

Online Applications:
Candidates who wish to apply online can fill up Application form by clicking “APPLY ONLINE” link on website and payment can also be made online through Debit card, Credit Card and Internet Banking.
Note: Those who are not able to make the online payment can send the payment to the University through a DD of Rs. 500/- in favour of Usha Martin University payable at Jharkhand.
Offline Applications:
Candidates can download the Form from website. If the Application Form is downloaded from the website, the applicants are required to enclose a Demand Draft of `500/- in favour of Usha Martin University, Jharkhand, payable at Jharkhand along with the Application Form, failing which the application shall be rejected.
A duly filled Application Form must be delivered in person or sent through registered post/ speed post/ reputed courier service to ensure that the application form is received by the University within the specified time and date. The form can also be sent to the city office mentioned on the website
Candidates can also collect Application Form from University campus and its selected Branches Offices as mentioned
Note:
After receiving the application form, the candidates will be informed by the University officials within 7 working days, and the information about admission (Through Entrance Exam or Merit Basis) will be intimated to candidates accordingly.
- If a student admitted to the institute is found to have given any false information or suppressed any material information, his/her admission will be cancelled, and fees will not be refunded.
- Cost of application fee once paid is non-refundable.
- The institute does not take responsibility for the delay in transit involved in receipt and delivery of any communication between the institute and the applicant.
- All disputes are subject to the legal jurisdiction of District Ranchi, Jharkhand, (India).
- Those who are given provisional admission due to non-declaration of their graduation result are required to submit the marks sheet up to 31st October 2020.
- Students must follow all the rules and regulations, framed from time to time by the institute. Breach of any of these may render him/her liable for penalty under the rules and/or expulsion from the institute
The University reserves the right to alter the course content of the programmes, rules and regulations, teaching schedule, tuition fee payable, boarding and lodging fees and/or any other matter pertaining to its working. The Management’s decision will be deemed as final in all such matters.
Only those candidates who had their Bachelor’s Degree Programmes under 10+2+4 OR 10+2+3 OR 10+1+4 system (OR awarded B.Sc. degree under 10+2+2 system prior to 1985) and fulfil the qualifications as prescribed in the bulletin are eligible to apply for admission.
For General/OBC candidates: At least 60% marks OR an overall grade point average (OGPA) of 7.00 out of 10.00 OR 3.50 out of 5.00 OR 2.8 out of 4.00 OR 2.21 out of 3.00 in M.Sc./M.Sc. (Ag.)/M.Tech./M.E.
For SC/ST/PC candidates: At least 55% marks OR GPA of 6.50 out of 10.00 OR 3.25 out of 5.00 OR 2.6 out of 4.00 OR 1.95 out of 3.00 in M.Sc./M.Sc. (Ag.)/M.Tech./M.E.
Age Limit – The minimum age for admission shall be 21 years. No relaxation is admissible regarding the minimum age limit.
